Memories: June 14 – 20, 2010

I made plums for Sydney today. I thought they were sweet and delicious. And that color, GORGEOUS. How could she not love them at first sight and first taste? Oh, let me count the ways.

Today “marks” the day that we began talking about finding a new home for Buster. He has peed (and pooped once) outside the box, though thankfully in the same place on the tile and not on the carpet or hardwood floors. We suspect he is unhappy with how little attention he gets (We’re down to food, fresh water and box cleaning right now, folks. That’s it.), and the peeing may be his protest. We’ve run a few tests with the vet (to the tune of $200+), and it’s possible there is something going on with his kidneys. We’ll know more in two weeks.

Sydney is log rolling like nobody’s business. Time to get the childproofing started. As I was walking through the house plugging all the outlets, I felt a little bit like a kid hunting for my Easter basket. Except for the chocolate. Sadly, there was no chocolate.

The Lady’s Mantle is blooming. I took a cutting and brought some inside in a vase by the kitchen sink. Ryan tends to move the vase because “It’s in the way when I do the dishes.” (I keep the cut flowers right next to the dish liquid. Which is the same green color by the way.) I tell him, “Too bad. It’s good feng shui to keep some plants above the sink holes. It keeps all of our relationship energy from rushing down the drain with the dishwater.” …Errr. Something like that.

The best part of my day today? I’m not going to lie: drawing the blinds and going to bed while it was still light out. Oh, Parenthood, you are the high life.

I treated myself to A Red Velvet Cupcake today. Notice the capital letters there. That bright red color and that silky cream cheese frosting just called to me. And I can still rationalize fatty food because I’m breastfeeding. It’ll help with my milk production. Nevermind the sugar. Indulge, darling. …That little doughy angel on my right shoulder and the scrawny red devil on my left agreed on this call, and everything about that cupcake was divine.

We picked up our first CSA shipment today. Baby lettuce, leaf lettuce, rhubarb, spinach, parsley and cilantro, and the best eggs we’ve ever had. Couple that with some basil and rosemary growing in pots on the patio, and we are off to a great start for fresh, organic summer food.

PS Shout out to Uncle Dane who gave us these kitty mugs as a gag gift two Christmases ago. Check out the wonky type on the mug on the right. Nice.

Plums Photo: Rich color! Can’t believe Syd wouldn’t eat THAT. Freeze it and save it for me when I am in town.

Cupcake Photo: That looked delicious. Really. And when I give myself a treat, I can no longer say, “I am nursing. This is good for my milk production.” And then twap that evil red devil off my shoulder. Jealous that I can’t justify that way anymore.

Bridgette, too late. I ate the plums in my yogurt. …But maybe we can make a fresh batch for your arrival. And, we’ll have to sneak over to Fiona’s for some Red Velvet Cupcakes, too.
