Memories: June 21- June 27

June 27, 2010

This is my favorite destination on one of our short walks. The entire front yard approaches xeric, in the best sense of the word. And, for sure, this gardener has taught me to appreciate cactus. See that fuchsia color in the background? Yep, cactus. Who knew?! …We moved to the neighborhood last August, so I missed seeing these plants in bloom, and all winter long, these plants lent beautiful architectural interest to the yard. But, I found myself wondering, cactus? Really? Covering that much real estate? And then, when I saw these plants in bloom today, I felt a tiny place in my heart make room for cactus.

I can’t call myself a photographer and leave home without the camera, now can I? …It’s always the last thing on my list, and I often forget it, or weakly decide to leave it behind. Check out my list, and you might understand why.

  1. Baby
  2. Keys
  3. Stroller
  4. Car seat
  5. Blanket (for sun shading)
  6. Sun hat for Sydney
  7. Water bottle
  8. Dog
  9. Collar
  10. Leash
  11. At least two poop bags
  12. Double check for keys
  13. Phone
  14. Purse and wallet (if on an errand and not just a walk…)
  15. Sunglasses for Mommy
  16. Sunglasses for Sydney
  17. Diaper bag (again, if on an errand and not just a walk…)
  18. Camera

So, now thanks to Ryan for making and posting this note, I’m 90% likely to take the camera out with me. And more thanks to Ryan for taking this picture on a day when I squandered many opportunities but still wanted to honor this project.

There have been wildfires burning in the mountains. Sunsets are always more dramatic when there’s smoke blowing over the mountains. And, with thunderstorm season upon us, this made for a beautiful sunset sky.

Again, thank you Ryan, for taking the camera on our walk and capturing this moment and memory.

We’ve been making time for (s    l    o    w) walks after dinner. Ryan’s feet have been troubling him all Spring and Summer so far, and for a while, he needed to be off them all the time. But, they’ve improved enough (or he’s stir crazy enough) that he’s able to join us on evening walks. This is a nice, peaceful way to wind down before bedtime and enjoy Colorado Summer as it starts to cool off.

This is the view, looking West for those of you who don’t know your geography, at the end of our street. Off in the distance is Horsetooth Rock, a local and Front Range landmark. (Notice the “teeth” and gaps in the rock at the center of the photograph.) It sits above our city’s water supply in Horsetooth Reservoir.

The Linden trees are blooming right now. (Along with the Cottonwoods, Catalpas and Japanese Lilacs.) The Linden trees have the most luxurious and sweet smell. Despite the fact that I’ve been sneezing non-stop, their perfume makes my brain-shaking ACHOOs all worthwhile. Sydney and I make it a point to walk through the allee on Corbett, just north of the house, so we can take in the fragrance and admire the yellow bracts and bells. Someday when we have a yard of our own, we will plant Linden trees.

Today went by before I realized, I need a photo for The Memory Project. As I turned around in my desk chair (Yes, working in the bedroom, bad feng shui, I know. It’s the best I can do right now.), I saw the evening light come through the blinds and project this spinal column of light on the wall. I thought of the chakras and the realignment that can only come from a good night’s rest. It is nice to know I have a comfy bed and pretty sheets and a loving partner to share them with every night.

We interviewed a nanny today. She came to the house, and we talked through our four pages of questions for 2.5 hours or so. She seems terrific. Like, OMG Terrific. And, I don’t think we scared her off with all of our questions.
